Barclay James Harvest is an English progressive rock band that was formed in 1966 in Oldham, Lancashire. The band originally consisted of John Lees (guitar, vocals), Les Holroyd (bass, vocals), Stuart "Woolly" Wolstenholme (keyboards, vocals), and Mel Pritchard (drums). The band's early music was heavily influenced by the psychedelic rock of the late 1960s, but they eventually developed a more melodic and symphonic sound that incorporated elements of classical music. They released their first album, "Barclay James Harvest," in 1970, and it was followed by a string of successful albums throughout the 1970s, including "Once Again," "Everyone Is Everybody Else," and "Gone to Earth." Barclay James Harvest was known for their lush, orchestral arrangements and intricate harmonies, as well as their socially conscious lyrics. They were also known for their dynamic live shows, which often included elaborate light shows and projections. The band experienced a decline in popularity in the 1980s, but they continued to release albums and tour throughout the decade and into the 1990s. They eventually disbanded in 1998, but John Lees continued to perform under the name Barclay James Harvest featuring John Lees. Despite their commercial success and critical acclaim, Barclay James Harvest never achieved the same level of recognition in the United States as they did in Europe. However, they remain a cult favorite among progressive rock fans and are considered one of the most important bands in the genre.
