The Cryan Shames
The Cryan' Shames were an American rock band formed in Hinsdale, Illinois, in 1966. The band consisted of Tom Doody (vocals, guitar), Dave Purple (bass), Alan Dawson (drums), Jim Fairs (vocals, guitar), Dennis Conroy (vocals, guitar), and Jerry Stone (keyboards).
The Cryan' Shames began playing around the Chicago area, and soon built up a local following. In 1966, they released their first single, "What Am I Going to Do?," which received airplay on local radio stations. The band's big break came in 1967, when they signed with Columbia Records and released their debut album, "Sugar & Spice."
The album was a success, and included the hit single "Sugar and Spice," which reached #49 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The Cryan' Shames followed up with a string of moderately successful singles, including "It Could Be We're in Love," "I Wanna Meet You," and "Up on the Roof."
The band's sound was a mix of folk-rock and pop, with lush harmonies and jangly guitars. They were often compared to other popular bands of the era, such as The Byrds and The Lovin' Spoonful.
The Cryan' Shames continued to record and tour throughout the late 1960s, but never achieved the same level of success as some of their peers. They disbanded in 1970, but have reunited for occasional performances over the years.
Despite their relatively short career, The Cryan' Shames left a lasting impact on the Chicago music scene and are remembered as one of the city's most beloved bands of the 1960s.
