Elf was an American rock band formed in 1967 in Cortland, New York, originally as The Electric Elves, then The Elves. The band was led by singer and bassist Ronald Padavona, who later became better known as Ronnie James Dio, one of the most influential and revered vocalists in the history of heavy metal music. Elf released their self-titled debut album in 1972, which showcased their blend of blues, rock, and R&B. The album received critical acclaim and featured contributions from keyboardist Micky Lee Soule, guitarist David Feinstein, and drummer Gary Driscoll. The band had come to the attention of Deep Purple bassist and drummer Roger Glover and Ian Paice, who produced the album. Elf would enjoy some success in the following years opening for Deep Purple on tour. The band's second album, "Carolina County Ball," was released in 1974 and included the hit single "Do the Same Thing." However, the album failed to achieve commercial success. Despite the setback, the band continued to tour and record, releasing another album, "Trying to Burn the Sun"in 1975. Ritchie Blackmore, having tired of Deep Purple by this point decided to record a solo album and decided to use the members of Elf, thus forming the band Rainbow. Despite their relatively short-lived career, Elf's music has had a lasting impact on the rock and metal genres. Many of their songs, including "Hoochie Koochie Lady" and "Carolina County Ball," are considered classics of the era. Additionally, Dio's powerful vocals and showmanship helped set the standard for the heavy metal genre, and his influence can still be heard in the music of countless bands today.
