Jerry Garcia (1942-1995) was an American musician best known as the lead guitarist and vocalist of the band Grateful Dead. He was born in San Francisco and showed an early talent for music, learning to play the piano at age 4 and the guitar at age 15. Garcia's career began in the early 1960s as a folk and bluegrass musician, playing in various groups such as the Sleepy Hollow Hog Stompers and the Black Mountain Boys. In 1965, he formed the Grateful Dead with fellow musicians Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, Bill Kreutzmann, and Mickey Hart. The band's music fused elements of folk, rock, country, and blues, and they became known for their live performances and improvisational jams. As a guitarist, Garcia was known for his distinctive tone and improvisational style, often using a variety of effects pedals and playing in unconventional scales and modes. He was also a prolific songwriter, contributing many of the Grateful Dead's most beloved songs, such as "Truckin'," "Sugar Magnolia," and "Uncle John's Band." Garcia's life was marked by both musical success and personal struggles. He battled drug addiction for much of his life, and his health suffered as a result. He died of a heart attack in 1995 at the age of 53. Born Jerome John Garcia, August 1, 1942, San Francisco, California, USA; died August 9, 1995, Forest Knolls, California, USA.
