Steve Goodman

Steve Goodman was an American folk singer-songwriter who was born on July 25, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois, and passed away on September 20, 1984, at the age of 36 due to leukemia.

Goodman was known for his humorous and satirical lyrics, as well as his ability to write heartfelt ballads. He was also an accomplished guitarist and performer, known for his engaging live shows.

Goodman's best-known song is probably "City of New Orleans," which was later covered by Arlo Guthrie and became a hit in 1972. Other well-known songs written by Goodman include "You Never Even Call Me By My Name," "A Dying Cub Fan's Last Request," and "The Dutchman."

Despite his success as a songwriter, Goodman never achieved mainstream success as a performer, in part due to his struggles with health issues throughout his career. Nevertheless, his influence on the folk and Americana genres continues to be felt today.

Goodman was inducted into the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame in 1992, and in 2014 he was posthumously awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Americana Music Association.
