Strawberry Alarm Clock is a psychedelic rock band that originated in Los Angeles, California, in the mid-1960s. The band is best known for their 1967 hit single "Incense and Peppermints," which reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The band was formed in 1966 by high school friends Ed King (guitar) and Mark Weitz (keyboards). The original lineup also included Lee Freeman (guitar), Gary Lovetro (bass), and Randy Seol (drums). The band's name was inspired by a combination of "Strawberry Fields Forever" by The Beatles and the sound of an alarm clock. Strawberry Alarm Clock quickly gained popularity on the Los Angeles music scene, and their debut single "The Birdman of Alkatrash" was released in 1966. However, it was their second single, "Incense and Peppermints," that became a massive hit and propelled the band to national stardom. The band's sound was characterized by psychedelic rock with heavy use of keyboards, melodic vocal harmonies, and experimental arrangements. Their music often featured socially conscious lyrics and a focus on the counterculture of the 1960s. After the success of "Incense and Peppermints," the band released several more albums throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s, including "Wake Up...It's Tomorrow" and "The World in a Seashell." However, their commercial success declined, and the band eventually disbanded in 1971. Over the years, various incarnations of Strawberry Alarm Clock have reunited for tours and recordings, and their music continues to be appreciated by fans of psychedelic rock and 1960s counterculture.
