Styx is an American rock band that formed in Chicago, Illinois in 1972. The original lineup consisted of Dennis DeYoung (vocals, keyboards), James "J.Y." Young (guitar, vocals), John Curulewski (guitar), Chuck Panozzo (bass), and John Panozzo (drums). Over the years, the band has undergone several lineup changes, but DeYoung, Young, and the Panozzo brothers remained the core members throughout their most commercially successful period. Styx rose to fame in the 1970s with their hit single, "Lady", and later with a string of hit singles and albums. The band's sound was a blend of progressive rock, hard rock, and pop, and their songs often featured elaborate arrangements and harmonies. Successful albums throughout the late 1970s and 1980s included "Pieces of Eight" (1978), "Cornerstone" (1979), and "Paradise Theater" (1981). Their hit songs from this period include "Babe", "Renegade," "Too Much Time on My Hands," and "Mr. Roboto." The band went through some lineup changes during this time, with Tommy Shaw replacing Curulewski on guitar in 1975, and drummer Todd Sucherman joining the band in 1996 after John Panozzo's death. In addition to their commercial success, Styx was also known for their elaborate stage shows, which included pyrotechnics, laser lights, and other special effects. They became known as one of the most popular live acts of the era, and their concerts were frequently sold out. Despite their success, Styx went through a period of turmoil in the 1980s, as tensions between DeYoung and the other members of the band led to his departure in 1999. The band continued on with new members, but they never regained their commercial peak. In recent years, a lineup featuring Shaw, Young, Ricky Phillips, Todd Sucherman and Lawrence Gowan tours, with founding member Chuck Panozzo often making appearances at the live shows.
