The Band
The Band was a Canadian-American rock group formed in 1967 in Woodstock, New York. The original members included Rick Danko (bass guitar, vocals), Levon Helm (drums, vocals), Garth Hudson (keyboards, saxophone), Richard Manuel (keyboards, vocals), and Robbie Robertson (guitar, vocals).
The Band is widely considered one of the most influential and important groups in the history of rock music. They were known for their soulful, rootsy sound, blending elements of folk, country, rock, and R&B. They were also renowned for their intricate harmonies and thoughtful, introspective lyrics.
Some of their most well-known songs include "The Weight," "Up on Cripple Creek," and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." The Band also gained notoriety for their collaborations with other artists, including Bob Dylan, with whom they toured extensively in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
The Band disbanded in 1976, following a legendary farewell concert called "The Last Waltz," which was filmed by Martin Scorsese and is considered one of the greatest concert films of all time. However, the individual members continued to perform and record music in various capacities until their deaths. Richard Manuel died in 1986, Rick Danko in 1999, and Levon Helm in 2012. Garth Hudson and Robbie Robertson continue to perform and make music to this day.
All members of The Band were former members of Ronnie Hawkins' Hawks. -GSH
