High school friends David Paich, Jeff Porcaro, Steve Lukather, and, Joseph Williams played in bands and worked as session musicians. Paich, Lukather, Jeff Porcaro and David Hungate came to form the nucleus of Boz Scaggs' band before forming Toto in 1977, adding Steve Porcaro and Bobby Kimball to round out the line-up. Williams would come to join the band later, after Kimball's departure. Toto is known for their eclectic sound that blends elements of rock, pop, funk, and jazz. Their self-titled debut album, released in 1978, featured the hit singles "Hold the Line" and "Georgy Porgy" and established the band as a commercial success. Their subsequent albums, including "Toto IV" (1982), which featured the hits "Rosanna" and "Africa," and "The Seventh One" (1988), also achieved significant commercial success. Toto's musicianship and versatility have earned them a loyal fan base and critical acclaim. The band has won several Grammy Awards over the years, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year for "Rosanna" in 1983. The band's lineup has changed over the years, but Toto has continued to tour and record new music. In addition to their original material, Toto has also worked as session musicians for other artists, including Michael Jackson, Boz Scaggs, and Steely Dan. In 2020, the band released "With a Little Help from My Friends," a covers album featuring guest appearances by a range of artists, including Ringo Starr, Joseph Williams, and Steve Lukather Jr. Toto I (1977 - 1984)
