U2 is an Irish rock band formed in Dublin in 1976, but would not perform under that name until 1978. The band consists of Bono (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), The Edge (lead guitar, keyboards, and backing vocals), Adam Clayton (bass guitar), and Larry Mullen Jr. (drums and percussion). The initial iteration of the band included The Edge's older brother Dik Evans. U2's music is often characterized by its epic sound, anthemic choruses, and the use of innovative guitar effects by The Edge. The band has released 15 studio albums and has sold over 170 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling music artists of all time. Some of their most famous songs include "With or Without You," "One," "Sunday Bloody Sunday," "Where the Streets Have No Name," and "Beautiful Day." They are also known for their socially and politically conscious lyrics, and Bono's activism in various humanitarian causes, including the fight against poverty and the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa. U2 has won numerous awards, including 22 Grammy Awards, more than any other band, and they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. They have also been widely praised for their live performances, which often include elaborate stage designs and multimedia effects. Feedback / The Hype (1976 - 1978)
