The Leaves

The Leaves were a rock band formed in Los Angeles, California in the early 1960s. The band was initially made up of five members: Jim Pons (bass guitar), Bill Rinehart (guitar, vocals), Robert Lee Reiner (guitar), Tom Ray (harmonica, vocals), and John Beck (drums).

The Leaves are best known for their hit song "Hey Joe," which was a cover of the 1962 song by the folk singer Billy Roberts. The Leaves released "Hey Joe" in November 1965, and dissatisfied with the sound, pulled it. They released a second version in early 1966, without success. Original guitarist Bill Rinehart left, and The Leaves redid the song once again, this time with a fuzztone effect by new guitarist Bobby Arlin. This version of the song became a hit, and debuted on both Billboard and Cash Box on May 21, 1966. It peaked at No. 31 on Billboard.

The Leaves also recorded other songs during their career, including "Love Minus Zero," "Too Many People," and "Dr. Stone." They were known for their garage rock sound, which was popular in the mid-1960s.

The band went through several personnel changes during their career, with Jim Pons leaving in 1966 to join the Turtles, and Bill Rinehart leaving in 1967 to form a new band called Giant Sunflower. The Leaves continued to perform and record with new members, but they never achieved the same level of success as they did with "Hey Joe."

Despite their relatively short career, the Leaves are considered to be an important part of the early Los Angeles rock scene, and their music continues to be celebrated by fans of garage rock and 1960s music.
