Ultimate Spinach was an American psychedelic rock band that was active in the late 1960s. The band was formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1967 by Ian Bruce-Douglas, who was the group's primary songwriter and lead vocalist. The band was known for its experimental and improvisational approach to music, and its members often incorporated elements of jazz, folk, and classical music into their songs. Ultimate Spinach released three albums during their brief career. Their self-titled debut album was released in 1968 and included the hit single "Ballad of the Hip Death Goddess." The album featured complex song structures and instrumental arrangements, and showcased the band's psychedelic sound. Their second album, "Behold & See," was released later that year and continued to explore themes of spirituality and transcendence. In 1969, Ultimate Spinach released their third and final album, "Ultimate Spinach III." The album was more experimental than their previous releases, featuring longer songs with extended instrumental sections. The band's popularity began to decline around this time, and they disbanded shortly after the album's release. Despite their relatively short career, Ultimate Spinach has been influential on the psychedelic and progressive rock genres. Their music has been cited as an inspiration by artists such as The Flaming Lips and Animal Collective.
