Blues Image was an American rock band that formed in Tampa, Florida in the late 1960s. The band's music was a fusion of rock, blues, Latin and jazz, and they are best known for their hit song "Ride Captain Ride", which was released in 1970. The original lineup of Blues Image consisted of Mike Pinera on guitar and vocals, Joe Lala on drums and percussion, Malcolm Jones on bass, and Manuel Bertematti on percussion. The band released their self-titled debut album in 1969, which featured a mix of original songs and cover versions of blues and rock classics. "Ride Captain Ride" was released as a single from Blues Image's second album, "Open", in 1970. The song was a commercial success, reaching #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and becoming a staple of classic rock radio. Blues Image released several more albums throughout the 1970s, but none were as successful as "Open". The band's lineup changed frequently, with Pinera being the only constant member. They disbanded in the late 1970s, but Pinera continued to perform and record music in various projects. Overall, Blues Image is remembered as an important part of the rock music scene in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and their fusion of rock and blues with Latin and jazz elements helped to pave the way for many other bands in the genre.
