Deep Purple
Deep Purple is a British rock band that formed in Hertford, England in 1968. The band is known for their hard rock sound and innovative musicianship, and they have been credited as pioneers of heavy metal and modern hard rock.
The original lineup of Deep Purple included lead vocalist Rod Evans, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, bassist Nick Simper, keyboardist Jon Lord, and drummer Ian Paice. This lineup released three studio albums in the late 1960s, including their debut album "Shades of Deep Purple" (1968), which featured their hit single "Hush."
In 1969, the band underwent a significant lineup change when Evans and Simper were replaced by singer Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover. This new lineup released their seminal album "Deep Purple in Rock" (1970), which marked a shift towards a heavier, more guitar-driven sound. The album featured classic tracks such as "Speed King" and "Child in Time," and established the band's reputation as one of the leading hard rock acts of the era.
Throughout the 1970s, Deep Purple continued to release a string of successful albums and tour extensively. Their most commercially successful album, "Machine Head" (1972), featured the hit singles "Smoke on the Water" and "Highway Star." The band's live shows were also renowned for their high-energy performances and epic improvisations.
However, internal tensions and creative differences led to a series of lineup changes in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Gillan and Glover both left the band in 1973, and Blackmore departed in 1975 to form Rainbow. Deep Purple continued to release albums with various lineups, but their popularity began to decline in the late 1970s.
In 1984, the "classic" lineup of Deep Purple (Gillan, Blackmore, Lord, Glover, and Paice) reunited for a successful world tour. However, Blackmore left the band again in 1993 and was replaced by guitarist Steve Morse. The band has continued to tour and record with various lineups in the years since, and they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.
Overall, Deep Purple is regarded as one of the most influential and enduring hard rock bands of all time, with a legacy that spans over five decades. Their music continues to inspire new generations of rock fans, and their classic lineup is considered one of the greatest in rock history.
