The Nice
The Nice was a progressive rock band that formed in London, England in the 1960s. The band consisted of keyboardist Keith Emerson, bassist Lee Jackson, drummer Brian Davison, and later guitarist Davy O'List.
The Nice were known for their virtuosic instrumental performances, incorporating elements of classical music, rock, and jazz. Emerson's dynamic and theatrical keyboard playing, which included the use of a Hammond organ and a Moog synthesizer, became a signature element of the band's sound.
The Nice's debut album, "The Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack" (1967), was a critical and commercial success. The album featured a mixture of original compositions and covers, including a rendition of Leonard Bernstein's "America" from West Side Story. The band's live performances also gained a reputation for their theatricality, often featuring flamboyant stage antics and visual effects.
The band continued to release albums throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s, including "Ars Longa Vita Brevis" (1968), "Nice" (1969), and "Five Bridges" (1970). The latter featured a performance with the London Symphony Orchestra and was considered a groundbreaking fusion of rock and classical music.
The Nice disbanded in 1970, with Emerson going on to form the influential progressive rock group Emerson, Lake & Palmer.
