Rhinoceros was a rock band that was active in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The band was formed in 1967 in California by several experienced musicians, including Doug Hastings, Jerry Penrod, and John Finley, among others. Rhinoceros released their self-titled debut album in 1968, which featured a blend of rock, blues, and jazz influences. The album was produced by famous producer Paul Rothchild, who had previously worked with The Doors and Janis Joplin. The album received critical acclaim and helped establish the band as a promising new act. The band's music was characterized by their use of multiple horns and other unconventional instruments, which set them apart from many of their contemporaries. Their live performances were known for being energetic and dynamic, and they quickly gained a reputation as a must-see live act. Despite their early success, Rhinoceros struggled to maintain their momentum, and the band experienced several lineup changes over the years. They released several more albums throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s, but none of them achieved the same level of success as their debut. Rhinoceros disbanded in 1972, but their influence can still be felt in the music of many contemporary rock bands. Their unique blend of musical styles and willingness to experiment with new sounds and instruments helped pave the way for many of the progressive and experimental rock bands that followed in the years to come. Rhinoceros I (1968 - 1969)
Rhinoceros II (1969 - 1970)
Rhinoceros III (1970)
