The Jefferson Airplane / Starship
Jefferson Airplane was an American rock band formed in San Francisco in 1965. They were a prominent band in the counterculture movement of the 1960s, and their music combined elements of rock, folk, psychedelic, and blues music.
The band initially consisted of vocalist Signe Toly Anderson, guitarists Paul Kantner and Jorma Kaukonen, bassist Jack Casady, and drummer Skip Spence. However, Anderson was replaced by Grace Slick in 1966, and this new lineup would become the most famous iteration of the band.
Jefferson Airplane's early albums, such as "Surrealistic Pillow" and "After Bathing at Baxter's," were highly influential and helped to define the psychedelic rock sound of the era. Some of their most famous songs include "Somebody to Love," "White Rabbit," and "Volunteers."
The band's music often reflected the social and political issues of the time, and they were known for their activism and involvement in various causes, such as the anti-war movement and the fight for civil rights. Jefferson Airplane disbanded in 1972, but various members went on to form other bands such as Jefferson Starship and Hot Tuna.
